The Value of Simulation Tools for Small Companies

Posted in: Uncategorized by admin on October 3, 2010 | No Comments

If any of you have been blessed or cursed with being the only formulating chemist for your company, you are not alone. For the past month and for the first time in my career, I have been challenged with being just that, the sole formulator for my employer.

In the current economic market more and more of us are finding ourselves in this situation. Although, this could be overwhelming, I find myself enthusiastically rising to the challenge.

I count myself fortunate that I am employed by a company that allows me to market the formulating tools that I have developed over the years.  Why do they allow me to market tools that I developed before I came to work for them? It’s simple. It is a perfect synergy.  As a small business, the company relies on its ability to develop products quickly. I have developed the perfect tool to achieve quick and accurate product development.

The company has become a case study of how simulation tools can help small companies develop products quickly with a very lean staff.  The tools that I have developed are being used in my everyday formulating.  Products are being developed or improved with regularity.  R&D is not a bottle neck.  The bottle neck is getting raw materials quick enough to scale up for trial.  If the raw materials are readily available, you can develop products in less than a day and be ready to ship the next day.  I have done it.  Of course that is an exception and not the rule.  Sometimes I feel like a short order cook!

If you are a chemist that finds yourself spread thin, look for ways to increase your productivity.  But why develop a tool when one is already developed for you.  The GoFormulate simulation tool could be just what you have been looking for.  Tell your employer about it.  It will be a win-win for you and your employer just as it has been for me.
